[00:00:00] I've always loved trains, not just as transportation, but as an experience. There's something about rail travel that feels grounded. You see the land change, you feel the distance. And out here in the Southwest, that matters. Every time I read about Amtrak Sunset Limited, especially its route through Southern Arizona, I'm reminded of a frustrating truth. Phoenix still doesn't have direct passenger rail service. The closest stop is in Maricopa, about half an hour south of the city. [00:00:26] Still, the idea is hard to let go. From there, the Sunset Limited heads west through the desert, across the California border and into Los Angeles. And for me, LA wouldn't be the destination, it would be the connection. Because once you arrive, you can transfer to the Pacific Surfliner, one of the most scenic train routes in the country, running right along the Southern California coast. That journey from Arizona desert to Pacific shoreline feels like everything rail travel is supposed to be. Not rushed, not cramped, just watching the country unfold. This isn't nostalgia. It's about options. Phoenix is one of the largest cities in America, yet rail travelers still have to improvise just to get on board. Someday, I hope that changes. Until then, the Sunset Limited remains both a real train and a reminder of what passenger rail in the Southwest could be.
