Before modern dry cleaning became an everyday convenience, one innovator changed the game. Thomas Jennings, a skilled tailor from New York City, made history in 1821 as the first African American to receive a U.S. patent. His invention—known as “dry scouring”—introduced a new way to clean delicate fabrics without water, laying the foundation for the global dry-cleaning industry we rely on today.
But Jennings’ impact went beyond innovation. He used the profits from his success to support abolitionist causes, helping advance the fight for freedom years before the American Civil War.
